Pinecrest Recreation Center HVAC and Lighting Replacement

Replaced the 2007 HVAC system and all interior lighting, improving gym ventilation and cutting electricity use by about a quarter.

Project overview

The original 2007 rooftop units were failing and could not maintain temperature in the gymnasium during summer programming. They were replaced with high-efficiency units and a building management system that allows scheduling by zone.

All interior lighting was converted to LED with occupancy sensors. Metered electricity use for the twelve months after completion is down 26 percent compared with the same period before the work.

  • Install occupancy sensors in the gymnasium, corridors and multipurpose rooms
  • Add carbon dioxide sensors and demand-controlled ventilation in the gymnasium

Project updates

  1. June 10, 2026

    Energy savings confirmed at 26 percent

    The twelve-month post-completion energy report presented to the Board on June 9 confirmed a 26 percent reduction in metered electricity use, slightly ahead of the 22 percent projected at design.

  2. March 2, 2026

    Facility fully reopened

    The gymnasium reopened on February 27 following commissioning and air balancing. Total closure time was nine days, three fewer than scheduled.
